Which document applies

  • Armenia applies Customs Union technical regulation TR CU 022/2011 "Food products in terms of their labelling" (Customs Union Commission Decision No. 881 of 09.12.2011). It was put into effect in Armenia by Government Decision No. 1009-N of 01.08.2019 (point 1, sub-point 9) and is listed on the site of the Food Safety Inspection Body.
  • Text of the regulation: TR CU 022/2011, Art. 4, version as amended to 10.11.2024 (the text is in Russian).
  • Some product types (dairy, meat, juices, specialised food and others) have their own technical regulations with extra labelling requirements (Art. 1 point 4 of the regulation).

Language

Text is applied in Russian and in the state language of the member state where its legislation requires it (Art. 4.1 point 2). For goods from third countries, the manufacturer's name and location may be given in Latin letters or in the state language of the manufacturer's country, but the country name must be in Russian (Art. 4.8 point 3).

We did not find in a primary source the specific Armenian provision on the state language on labels. Before printing a run, confirm the requirements with the Food Safety Inspection Body.

GMO

  • A product obtained using GMO carries the wording "genetically modified product", "product obtained from genetically modified organisms" or "product contains components of genetically modified organisms".
  • Next to the single mark of circulation goes a "GMO" mark of the same shape and size.
  • If GMO were not used and GMO content of 0.9% or less is an accidental admixture, no GMO information is given (Art. 4.11 point 1).

How to apply it

  • Labelling must be clear, easy to read, truthful, contrasting with the background and last for the whole shelf life (Art. 4.12 point 1).
  • Font of at least 2 mm (lower-case letters) for the name, quantity, manufacture date and expiry. At least 0.8 mm for composition, storage conditions, manufacturer details, usage recommendations, nutritional value of specialised food and the words that introduce dates.
  • Name, dates and storage conditions go on the package or on a label that is hard to remove. The rest may also go on an insert leaflet (Art. 4.12 points 2, 3).
  • If the largest side of the package is 10 cm2 or less, part of the information may go on a label or insert leaflet (Art. 4.12 point 4).
  • When retailers pack goods in the buyer's absence, the package shows the name, manufacture date, expiry and storage conditions (Art. 4.12 point 5).

Transport packaging

Transport packaging shows the name, quantity, manufacture date, expiry, storage conditions, batch information and the manufacturer (Art. 4.2 point 1).

Not covered

Requirements for alcohol, digital marking with control marks and specific product types are set by other acts. Some publications say the Armenian Government recently approved a list of requirements for packaging information, but we did not find the details of such an act and do not cite it.
