Tax Residency in Armenia in 2026: 183 Days, Center of Vital Interests, Certificate

Updated October 21, 2026

You are a tax resident of Armenia if you spend 183 days or more in the country in a calendar year or if your center of vital interests is here. A resident pays tax on worldwide income, a non-resident only on Armenian-source income. The State Revenue Committee issues the residency certificate free of charge in 2 working days.

In short

  • Tax residency in Armenia is defined by two independent tests: 183 days of presence in a calendar year, or a center of vital interests in the country.
  • One test is enough.
  • A resident pays tax on income from any source, a non-resident only on Armenian-source income.
  • The residency certificate helps you avoid being taxed twice in another country. In Armenia it is issued free of charge.

This information was checked against materials of the State Revenue Committee of Armenia (SRC, src.am) on 20.10.2026. The SRC guide we rely on is dated January 2025. The Tax Code changes often, so check the current text on arlis.am before making decisions.

Who is a tax resident of Armenia

According to the SRC guide, an individual is a resident of Armenia in three cases.

TestHow it works
183 daysYou were physically in Armenia for 183 days or more in the tax year. The tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December
Center of vital interestsYour family or economic interests are here: home or apartment, family, occupation, place of activity
Civil serviceYou are in the Armenian civil service and temporarily work abroad

The 183-day rule

  • The calendar year counts, not any 12 months in a row. This is what the SRC guide says. Some legal blogs write "any consecutive 12 months", which differs from the SRC. Follow the SRC.
  • The full dates of arrival and departure count as days of presence, however many hours you spent in the country on those days.
  • If you are considered a resident on any date in the year, you are a resident for the whole year. For example, you arrived in July and reached 183 days by year end: you are a resident for the entire year, including income since January.

For the length of stay without a residence permit see the separate article: 180 days without a residence permit. That is an immigration rule and is not tied to tax: you can be a tax resident without a residence permit, and the other way round.

Center of vital interests

This is a "substance" test. It works even if you spent fewer than 183 days. Armenia is your center of interests if you have here:

  • your home (owned or rented on a permanent basis);
  • your family;
  • your job or business, for example a sole proprietorship.

If you also have ties with another country, dual residency is resolved under the double tax agreement (the SRC recommends contacting the tax authorities of both countries in such cases).

What changes in taxes: resident and non-resident

ResidentNon-resident
Income taxedArmenian-source and foreign-sourceArmenian-source only
Income tax rates5%, 10% or 20% by type of incomeThe same rates by type of income
Annual declarationMandatory for resident citizens under the universal declaration (2023-2025)Not required under this rule
Tax paid abroadCan be credited (deducted) against Armenian taxNot applicable

Rates according to the SRC (guide, January 2025):

RateIncome it applies to
5%dividends
10%royalties, interest on bank deposits and publicly offered debt securities, rental income, income from sale of property (except sales by a developer), voluntary pension
20%salary and remuneration under civil law contracts, other interest, other income

In the guide the rates are tied to the type of income, not to resident status. Regimes for entrepreneurs (turnover tax, microbusiness) are not in this table, see tax regimes for sole proprietors.

Two things to know:

  • A resident is responsible for worldwide income. If you live in Armenia but your salary is paid from Russia, you may owe tax both in Armenia and in Russia. The treaty helps here.
  • The SRC guide describes the universal declaration for 2023-2025. We have not checked from a primary source how it works in 2026.

Tax residency certificate

This is the "Certificate of Confirmation of RA Resident Status". The SRC issues it so that you can present it to a foreign tax authority or bank and apply a double tax agreement.

According to e-services.src.am (checked 20.10.2026):

What we could not confirm from a primary source: the list of documents, the validity period, and how a foreigner without an Armenian document gets YesEm. These points are listed as open questions.

Before applying, make sure you really are a resident: you need either 183 days or a confirmed center of interests (for example, sole proprietor registration, a lease, family).

Double taxation (in brief)

Double taxation arises when two countries consider you a resident or both tax the same income. A treaty allocates the right to tax income between the countries and sets rules for dual residency.

  • Armenia has agreements with dozens of countries. We cannot give an exact number or a current list: the list on the Ministry of Finance page did not display when we checked.
  • The agreement with Russia was signed on 28.12.1996 and entered into force on 17.03.1998 (per the OECD list).
  • Tax paid abroad can be credited when calculating Armenian tax (SRC guide, section on deductions).

What to do in practice

  1. Count your days of presence in the calendar year using stamps and tickets. Arrival and departure days count.
  2. Assess your center of interests: housing, family, job, sole proprietorship.
  3. If you are a resident of Armenia with foreign income, check the treaty with the source country.
  4. If a foreign tax authority or bank asks for a certificate, apply at e-services.src.am.
  5. If you have no tax number, get it first: social number and tax number.
  6. Keep proof of your days: tickets, stamps, lease.

Frequently asked questions
